An apophysis is an area of growth cartilage found throughout a child’s body and serves as attachment sites for muscles and their tendons. When your child is diagnosed with apophysitis it means they have an irritation of this area of growth cartilage. It typically occurs in athletes as a consequence of repetitive use. On the other hand, an apophyseal injury occurs after a traumatic injury.
One common area a child may experience apophysitis is near the heel, clinically called calcaneus. The heel serves as the site of attachment of the large and strong Achilles tendon. Kids between ages 6-13 who are involved in running and jumping sports are at risk for developing a condition called Sever’s apophysitis. |
