Dr. Joshua Murphy is a native of Beckley, West Virginia. He attended Alderson-Broaddus College on an athletic scholarship for soccer. During his time at Alderson-Broaddus he was elected as an Academic All American, WVIAC All Conference, and Captain his senior year. He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in International Business Administration and Management Information Systems.
Dr. Murphy subsequently received his Doctorate of Medicine from West Virginia University School of Medicine, where he was active in student leadership including Class Vice President and Chairman of the Academic Council. Upon graduation from medical school, he completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Atlanta Medical Center where he served as chief resident in his final year. During his time at AMC he acted as a sideline and team physician for Atlanta Public Schools and select Gwinnett County schools. After completion of residency, Dr. Murphy completed a 1 year fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics at The Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis Fellowship of Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California.
Throughout his training, Dr. Murphy has remained active in research and leadership. In 2013, he was named as an Emerging Leader for the American Orthopaedic Association. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has worked to assist in developing the Appropriate Use Criteria for the management of pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures and the management of supracondylar humerus fractures involving vascular injury. He is also a candidate member of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America and Scoliosis Research Society in which he is involved with various leadership roles within each organization. Dr. Murphy remains active in Orthopaedic research with interests in trauma and spine deformity, and is involved with such multi-center research groups as the Growing Spine Study Group and Childrens Orthopaedic and Trauma Infection Consortium for Evidence Based Study (CORTICES). Dr. Murphy’s clinical interests include trauma, complex spine deformity, scoliosis, and limb deformity.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Nikki, and daughter, Alexandra. He also remains active mountain biking, cycling, alpine skiing, and more recently surfing.
